Violist and composer Rebecca Clarke enjoyed an international career as a viola virtuoso. Prior to fame as a soloist, she was one of the first women admitted to a professional orchestra in Britain. She would continue to break down barriers for the remainder of her career. Early on, she published compositions under a conspicuously male pseudonym, as opportunities for women in the male-dominated field were few to none.
Her music presents a truly original voice, and the Piano Trio (1921) heard tonight is a passionate testament to her genius.
Rebecca Clarke is featured on the 2020 WWCMF Poster in a reimagined portrait by Seattle design firm, Modern Dog.
